Sally Baker

Artist Statement:
I am a watercolor artist living in Sebastopol, California. I earned my B.A. from the University of California at Santa Barbara and my secondary teaching credential from the University of Southern California. I taught fine arts at the high school level for 34 years.

I would describe my artwork as sharp focus still lifes, with emphasis on strong shadow shapes, that capture specific moments in time. I feel that I am “”rescuing moments”” that otherwise would never be seen again. I also focus on compelling compositions and intense, luscious, saturated colors. I find the transparency of watercolor to be a metaphor for our times. By using thin layers of watercolor, I allow the light to shine through—Transparency Matters!

For years I have been drawn to painting persimmons. They have a magical and spiritual quality for me. Just as we are heading into the darkness of winter, they seem to illuminate the path forward with light, color and luminosity. The inclusion of glass objects in my compositions has permeated my paintings for years. Observing refraction through glass has been an exciting challenge, and I love the abstraction created by seeing through that prism. Other themes in my still lifes include Asian and Italian pottery, flowers, peppers, and patterned fabrics, especially kimonos. I have always been drawn to the Asian aesthetic and it seems to suit my style.

I feel it is important to express my thoughts personally as an artist during these unusual times. To me personally, the arts are needed more now than ever. It is a way that we connect to ourselves, to our environment, and to other people at a time when we cannot touch in our usual ways. All of the arts demonstrate our ability to communicate with one another regardless of our nationality, gender, religious affiliation, political ideology or ethnicity. It allows us to feel and share both the pain and the joys that we have in common. It also gives us the opportunity to view the world from someone else’s perspective.
It is my hope that the viewer will find my artwork compelling, will be engaged, visually enter the picture, slow down and visit for awhile. I hope my love of beauty lifts the viewer’s spirit.

Tim Haworth

Artist Statement:
Santa Rosa landscape artist, Tim Haworth finds inspiration in the striking beauty of Sonoma County and the North Bay. Tim has devoted most of his life to a pursuit of artistic expression. His formal education in the arts culminated with a degree in fine art from Sonoma State University. Having explored both figurative and abstract themes, Tim has returned to his roots, drawing and painting what he sees.

Plein Air landscape is a constant beckoning challenge and one will often find him out in nature trying to capture the subject in that short window of light. The wine country of Sonoma County and the forests of the North Coast provide unlimited subject matter for Tim’s original art.

Studio work provides the opportunity to work larger and in other mediums. Much of Tim’s recent field work utilizes pastel and watercolor as preferred mediums. Studio work is focused on oil, pastel and ink monotype.

Rik Olson

Artist Statement:
My “Mission” is to bring to physical reality, the best I can, the ideas and visions I have in my mind’s eye. I get inspired by ideas or a visual sight such as a bird flying by or a foggy morning and then try to bring this to life. I use pencil, gouge, engraving tool, Printmaking ,paint or other medium to bring out the character and life of the final piece. I like to work with very graphic and bold images and wood engraving, woodcut and linocut are the best mediums for me to bring the qualities I like. Other ideas are best with a paint brush, etching, mezzotint or other techniques that turn out to be the best medium.

Once the idea is clear on paper I transfer the sketch to a wood or linoleum block and the engraving or cutting begins. The gouge or engraving tool lends its character to the lines and final graphic quality to the image. Using the tools with the skills I have learned over the years brings the image to life. I print the images on antique hand printing presses such as my 2 Vandercook Letter presses or my Olivero Bendini etching press from Bolonga. I use a variety of inks and with my knowledge of how the inks and papers will work together I produce unique images. I only produce a limited number of prints in each edition so that there are only a small number of prints that are available from each block .

Every print is hand pulled by my hand. I am a Giclee free zone and do not produce prints of prints. I am considered by many to be a master of my craft but I continue to learn and try new approaches to enhance the images and bring new ideas to prints.

I also won a prize in the 3rd grade from the Walnut Creek Art Festival (in 1953) awarded to Ricky Olson and which still hangs with pride on my wall.

Sandra Rubin

Artist Statement:
I paint because I have to. I observe. I express. I try to... It is how I relate and interact with the world these days. Often I hope to notice and express beauty. Always truth. Sometimes my focus is the outside world, plein air, still life, or figure, usually abstracted, and expressive, to varying degrees.

I explore colors, shapes, marks- and play (and struggle at times) between plans and responses. Once in a great while, just often enough, something seems to come together- and come alive. And once in a while this is seen and appreciated. And this is so profoundly satisfying that I keep going…and keep changing… I mostly paint in oils, although sometimes in acrylics and watercolors, and I enjoy monoprints and mixed media as well.

I appreciate your interest...

Mylette Welch

Artist Statement:
Painter Mylette Welch was born in the sun-drenched, color saturated island of Oahu. Her family moved 3 years later to dusty, dry Bakersfield. “Something was missing.“She remembers thinking,”Where did all the color go?”For anyone who has seen Welch’s paintings, its obvious that the color went into her playful portraits of stray dogs, children, old diners, and rusty trucks.

Mylette’s paintings are rooted in the Sonoma County landscape- nostalgic places , farmer’s markets, the vineyards, neighbor’s gardens.

Occasionally her paintings veer off into a surrealistic world of dreams and memories, where goldfish swim around the kitchen and accordions fly through the night sky. “I like dreams bumping against reality.”she explained, comparing this juxtaposition to the moment when you first wake up and your dream is “out in the room somewhere.”

She has developed a series of paintings inspired by the question”what do dogs do late at night-on the loose?” Recently she has been working on a series of political paintings and large botanical works.

Mylette’s work can be found in galleries and shows throughout the area and beyond. “I like to also show in alternative settings like restaurants, schools and the dog groomer.” You may be eating dinner and see a dog and a couple of pigs grinning down at you from one of Mylette’s paintings.

When she paints, Mylette works fast and likes to listen to really good music in the company of a sweet Pug with three shades of paint on his tail. I try to have a good time,”she said. “When people view my work hope it makes them smile.”
